LPC Peewee CHAMPIONS!!

On January 13, 2019 LPC Peewee Red won gold at the Can Am Challenge Cup in Montreal, Quebec beating out a strong Perth Lanark Wings Peewee Select team by a score of 5-4.  Having dropped their round robin game to the Wings 4-1, the boys were itching for redemption.

The Wings were up 3-0 midway through the second period when head coach, Tony Tejerina called a time-out to rally the troops. Whatever he said must have worked as four minutes later defenceman Colton Morita blasted a shot from the point through a crowd for LPCs first goal.  By the end of the second it was 3-1 and momentum was starting to turn. Three minutes into the third LPC got its second goal to make it 3-2 but 40 seconds later the Wings answered with one of their own. The team didn’t let it phase them one bit!  Eight seconds later, off the centre ice face off, from a well-practiced set play, centre, Dylan Poirier sprung the speedy Andrew Morcombe who went straight through the Wings defence and drove home LPCs third goal with 8:04 left in the third period to make it 4-3.

From there the boys kept pouring it on and with 2:41 remaining, defenceman Kyle Ross fired a shot from the point that found its way through the Wings goalie to tie the game 4-4.  A minute and twenty seconds later Andrew Preston took a perfect pass in the right offensive corner from Matthew Sehgal off the hashmarks and took off for the front of the net.  The Wings defenceman left his position in front to engage Andrew and Andrew beautifully faked a shot and slid a tape-to-tape pass to Brandon Carrabetta in the slot who fired it into a wide open net giving LPC a 5-4 lead with 1:20 to go.

By this time the entire crowd was on its feet. With the goalie out and the Wings pressing hard for the tying goal the lads expertly pinned the puck behind their own net and held it there for the last 45 seconds of the game to win the championship 5-4!

The coaching staff and parents are so very proud of our players for showing such heart and never ever giving up, and for the sportsmanship they showed throughout the weekend.  This will be one that they remember for the rest of their lives.
